Domains marked as 'inactive' may be missing vital configuration and are effectively useless
Domains provide the backbone for all online services. ICANN (the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers) is the ultimate authorative body for domains and the individual registrars and hold their own records tracking the status of domains. This tracking is useful for monitoring domains that are migrating between registrars and serves as a definitive source of truth regarding the status of a domain.
If a domain is marked as inactive, it typically indicates that the domain is not available and has no presence in the Domain Name System. This usually occurs when some critical configuration is missing leaving the domain inoperable, most often the Name Server configuration
If you have recently registered a new domain or have one that is in the process of being transferred, it may remain in an inactive state until its records are populated. This process should not take more than a few days, yet if your domain remains in a long-term inactive status ICANN advises that you contact your registrar to understand what’s preventing the domain from becoming available.
Monitor any domains that are listed as inactive and follow up with your registrar after a few days if they remain in that state. Inactive domains offer little value so any issues will need to be resolved before the domain is ready for active use.
